The final between Argentina and Holland was a classic, with Johan Cruyff the star of the show. However, Argentina had their stars too, including Ossie Ardiles, just before his groundbreaking transfer to Tottenham Hotspur later that summer. They also had Mario Kempes, who was the leading goal scorer in the 1978 tournament, scoring a total of six goals, including two in the final itself.

Argentina managed to beat Holland 3-1 after extra time to win the World Cup and ensure that the 1978 World Cup shirt would become one of the most iconic Argentina football shirts of all time.

The Argentina 1986 World Cup strip is another retro football kit featuring the famous blue and white stripes. It is nearly always associated with one man, a football genius who practically single-handedly won Argentina their second World Cup. George Best was undoubtedly the most naturally gifted player to ever wear the famous Manchester United Shirt. Even though Best self-destructed and destroyed his own career in the saddest of manners, he is considered by many to be the greatest footballer of all time. If he had not taken the path of drinking and generally abusing his body, one can only speculate the legacy he would have created. Like Paul Gascoigne years later, Best’s potential was never fully realised.

George Best was born on 22nd May 1946 in the Cregagh area of Belfast. He led an unremarkable early childhood and although he was never without his ball, he was considered to small to ever consider a career in the game, despite his obvious ability. However he was eventually spotted by Bob Bishop, the Manchester United scout. Bishop was so captivated by Best’s talent that he sent a telegram to Matt Busby claiming to have found a genius. Following a trial, he was signed by Manchester United and turned professional shortly thereafter.

George Best played at Manchester United for six seasons and scored 115 goals. His debut was against West Bromwich Albion aged just 17. Best was part of a deadly trio made up of himself, Dennis Law and Bobby Charlton. Too much for their opponents, Manchester United swept to 2 league titles and a European Cup, beating Benfica 4-1 in the final. It was 1967 and Best was voted European Player Of The Year.

Best’s prodigious footballing talent coupled with his good looks made him the darling of the media in the same way that David Beckham has done in recent years. Off-field distractions soon started mounting up such as personal appearances, modeling contracts and nightclub ownerships. Best started to enjoy a hedonistic lifestyle and began drinking heavily. This started the the inexorable decline of his professional career. One of Best’s most famous quotes is his response when asked what he had done with all his money?”, which was: “I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.”

George Best walked out on Manchester United for the last time in 1974 aged just 27. His last game was against QPR on the 1st of January. He made 470 appearances scoring 179 goals in all competitions. He was Manchester United’s leading goalscorer for six consecutive seasons.

On the 25th November 2005, George Best died aged 59. He suffered organ failure at the Cromwell Hospital in London after failing to stop drinking following his 2002 transplant. He was given immuno-supressant drugs to stop his body rejecting the transplanted liver. This obviously laid him open to new infections.

George Best will be remembered as a genius of the beautiful game who wasted his natural talent to drink. His dazzling appearances in a Manchester United shirt are what he will be most remembered for. His loyal Irish fans perhaps summed him up best when they said : “Maradona good; Pelé better; George Best.”

I was stunned yesterday, when a colleague of mine mentioned the “genius” of wrinkle-free shirts. Now, I know what he meant — for men who are as busy as we are, few things seem less important than ironing a shirt. But we’re men, not slobs, so the wrinkle-free shirt seems like an obvious choice. That is, of course, if you want to waste time and money.

The truth is, wrinkle-free shirts will not last and they pose some serious health risks. At the end of the day, they will cost more money to replace and more time at the doctor’s diagnosing possible diseases. They are far from “genius.”

Consider the following when you shop for your next dress shirt:

1. The Quality of the Shirt is Decreased.
Take a wrinkle-free “100% cotton” shirt and put it next to a classic man’s dress shirt. First, notice the difference in the color intensity. When cotton is treated with chemicals to make it wrinkle-free, the rich color of the original dye is dulled and faded.

Second, notice the difference in texture. They don’t even both feel like cotton. There’s a reason that cotton has been used for thousands of years for fine clothing: it is comfortable, breathable, and looks great. In order to make a dress shirt non-iron, the cotton has to be treated to the point that it’s barely classifiable as cotton. The fabric doesn’t breathe anymore.

2. Non-Iron Shirts Don’t Last.
When the cotton has been treated with so many chemicals, it’s just not as durable. Aside from that, you know that wrinkle-freeness that made you buy the shirt in the first place? Well, that doesn’t last either.

Every time you wash your non-iron shirts, some of those wrinkle-removing chemicals wash out too. Depending on how intensely the cotton has been treated, the wrinkles may start showing up in just a few washes. I’ll also add that if you’re going to send your shirts to the laundry anyway, there isn’t much point in the non-iron property (which is going to decrease faster with professional laundering as well).

3. Wrinkle-Free Fabric May Actually Harm You.
I know this sounds far-fetched, but I’m serious. Those chemicals I’ve been mentioning? One of those used is formaldehyde — a known carcinogen. The more you pry into what makes a wrinkle-free shirt, the more it should concern you. They can cause skin problems, and even the vapors inhaled while wearing the shirts could be dangerous! Not worth the risk, in my opinion.

The truth is, the word “genius” is used too often. What is “genius” about taking a perfectly good shirt, dousing it in dangerous chemicals, and selling it to the masses? Next time, buy a classic cotton dress shirt, have it ironed, and leave the wrinkle-free for the sale racks.
